The Answer Movie: A Review

Several years ago I had the opportunity to see a movie called, The Answer. It told the story of a young man’s search for truth, Swami Kriyananda.

At the time, he was known as J. Donald Walters, and he was alone in New York when he walked into a bookstore and was drawn to pick up the book, Autobiography of a Yogi. The book changed him and it changed his life.

He took the next bus across the country, landing in California where Paramhansa Yogananda, author of the Autobiography had a yoga ashram. There he began a life full of meaning, inner joy, and deep meditation. His life became dedicated to the Divine and to helping others finding God.

The movie was a beautiful and uniquely told story to which many individuals searching for answers will relate. Tears streamed down my face as I felt a fire burning of enthusiasm to dedicate my own life, like Yogananda and Kriyananda in his footsteps, to the spiritual path or the search for eternal truths that tie us all together.

I remember my own search for answers, for peace and for joy. I was at a crossroads where it seemed I could either continue to be drawn into the typical trajectory most young people graduating college face, or I could launch myself into something different. More simple living, meaningful and joyful. More positive, more uplifting. That’s when Yogananda’s sharing of the universal spiritual path, a perfect blend of East and West, but centered in the inspiration and truth that has the power to speak to each soul and draw it back into perfect joy.

In pursuit of universal upliftment

After watching the film I was moved to my core for it was a reminder of the power of true love, friendship and searching for truth with others (fellowship or satsang). It was a reminder to ask the Divine to flow through you and guide your life, and to continually offer your energies and experiences back into this spirit. It was a reminder to choose the light, choose what is right, and to follow your heart. It spoke of the power of those great ones who know truth and know joy and express a love and kindness that is pure and strong.

The Answer was a reminder that there is a whole world out there that is less seen, but it is more vivid and real. It is a life lived for truth and in attunement with the higher Self, awakening our true potential and living from that space. It is about the inner quest that leads to awakening and freedom.

Summary of the film: The Answer

‘The Answer’ tells the powerful true story of an American, James Donald Walters. The film portrays his youthful quest for truth, which took him from his birthplace in Romania, to Switzerland and England, as far as the United States, where in 1948 in Hollywood, California he has the extraordinary meeting with Paramhansa Yogananda, the great Indian Master, author of ‘Autobiography of a Yogi’. Young Donald – later Swami Kriyananda – is immediately accepted as disciple and so his amazing spiritual journey begins.

‘The Answer’, is an epic motion picture that presents, for the first time on the cinematic screen, one of the most widely-known and revered spiritual Masters of our times, Paramhansa Yogananda, through the living testimony and in the own words of his direct disciple Swami Kriyananda who lived with him and vowed to carry his light to future generations.
